PERSONAL DOCUMENTARIES
These go by various names, including video biography, video history, legacy video, heirloom video, family history films. Regardless of what you call them, they all refer to the same thing – a video interview or interviews that may include photos, home movies and more. It’s documentary filmmaking at its best…and most personal!
These as a gift or legacy to family members, grandchildren or future generations. Who wouldn’t want their family history to live on? Your documentaries can weave a rich story with interviews and/or narration and adding family photos, home movies, historical footage and photos, yearbooks, newspaper and magazine articles, awards, trophies.
The Process
You see, as I was to discover, these “extraordinary” people didn’t think of themselves that way. The “extraordinary” things they did were, to themselves, quite ordinary. So ordinary, in fact, that below the surface of what other people knew about them and may have passed along, were some amazing details that nobody knew–and I eventually learned how to uncover them.
The fact is that these people were truly humble and invariably very hard-working. The furthest thing from their minds was personal promotion and public relations.
Moreover, in the process of interviewing hundreds, if not a thousand, people from all levels of the social strata from bottom to the top; from drug addicts to celebrities; from cops to religious leaders; from civil servants to royalty, in the course of making either documentaries or biographies, I started to realize that all people have fascinating stories.

There are many people who have contributed to the world of sport. I know, been producing video biographies for the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame for 12 years.

Every organization who depends on contributions has to consider how to thank and encourage donors. Traditional ways have been to name buildings, sponsorships, events, benches, etc.
